Vining was born in Philadelphia and educated at Bryn Mawr and Drexel. Vining's first book, "Meredith's Ann," was published in 1929 and over the years she published over 18 children's and religious books. Clarence Pickett (1884-1965) was a prominent Friend. The executive secretary of the American Friends Service Committee from 1929 to 1950, he was influential in governmental and international circles as well.
